CHAPTER 8

First Attack

As Autumn walked to school the next day, she thought about the conversation with her mother the night before. It was all right for her to go to the movie, but her mother was to drive her there and pick her up. Adam was not allowed to drive her anywhere at this point. He was a young driver, and Autumn’s mother didn’t want her in the car with him until he had more experience.

Autumn didn’t know how she felt about the whole thing. Adam had come on a little strong the day before, and she wondered if he would end up bulldozing right over her if given the chance. He was charming and probably knew it, she reasoned. He could get a million girls, so what was he doing with her? No, she was better off just blowing him off and letting him look elsewhere for his fun. She was sure he couldn’t actually be truly interested in her when the beautiful Sydney was around.

Glumly, she passed by Adam’s house without noticing she had done so. He watched her from the living room picture window, frowning. She was staring at the ground and walking alone.

“I want to talk to you.”

Autumn looked to her left to see Sydney heading straight for her. Autumn looked away and kept walking.

“I said I want to talk to you,” said Sydney, falling in step beside her.

“What do you want, Sydney?”

“Are you and Adam going out?”

Autumn took the school steps two at a time but didn’t answer. Sydney grabbed her arm before she could make it into the school.

“I know you’re stupid, but are you deaf too?” Autumn pulled away. “Go away and leave me alone.”

“I will when you answer me.”

“I don’t want to talk to you outside of tutoring class.”

Autumn turned to go, but Sydney grabbed on to her backpack, pulling it off her shoulders. Sydney threw it down the steps, and some of the contents spilled out.

Sydney took a step toward Autumn, who had silently bent down to pick up her things, when Adam appeared around the corner of the building. He saw what was happening and ran over to the girls. Sydney grabbed Autumn’s arm but dropped it when she saw him coming toward her.

“Hi, Adam,” she greeted sweetly, and he nodded curtly.

“What’s going on here?” he asked, watching Autumn’s face closely.

Autumn wouldn’t look at him.

“Everything’s fine,” she muttered, shoving items into her backpack. She picked it up and started through the school’s double doors. Adam and Sydney followed behind her.

“Adam, there’s a good movie at the cinema in town,” Sydney said, taking his arm. “Want to go with me? We could grab a bite to eat afterward.”

“Autumn and I are going to see the movie,” Adam answered, watching Autumn. She hadn’t said a word to him and wouldn’t even look at him. He wondered if he had done something wrong.

Autumn turned to see both Sydney and Adam staring at her. Sydney was glaring, and Adam was watching her, frowning. She turned away and headed down the hall.
